Is 2026 The Year of Horror? Because… We’ve Been Eating GOOD.
If you ask me, 2026 is shaping up to be one hell of a year for horror fans. And honestly? It’s about time.
After years of remakes nobody asked for, CGI disasters, and movies that somehow manage to be both boring and loud at the same time, horror finally feels alive again. We’ve already gotten some absolute bangers this year — and we still have several massive releases on the way.
So let’s talk about the good, the bad, and the “who approved this script?” of 2026 horror so far.
The Horror Releases That Actually Slapped
One thing I’ve loved this year is how varied the genre has been. We’re not just getting copy-paste possession movies anymore. Horror is finally experimenting again, and for the most part? It’s working.
We’ve already had:
- Send Help — dark humor survival thriller perfection.
- We Bury The Dead — a gritty zombie survival story that actually felt tense for once.
- Ready or Not 2 — chaotic, violent, dark comedy goodness.
- Scream 7 — because Ghostface apparently refuses to retire and honestly… thank God.
- Undertone — psychological horror mixed with supernatural beauty in the best way possible.
- Hokum — I haven’t watched this one yet, but people keep telling me it’s nightmare fuel, so naturally I’m intrigued.
And then there’s the movie I have not been able to stop thinking about…
OBSESSION Might Be My Favorite Horror Release Of The Year
Released May 15th, 2026, OBSESSION already has horror fans losing their minds — and from everything I’ve seen, deservedly so.
The story follows a shy guy working at a music store who buys a magical stick that grants one wish. Sounds harmless enough, right? Wrong. He wishes for his longtime crush to finally love him… and instead unleashes a violent, suffocating curse that spirals completely out of control.
Which, if you know me at all, you already know this is EXACTLY my kind of movie.
Give me toxic obsession. Give me psychological unraveling. Give me uncomfortable tension and people making horrible decisions. I eat this stuff UP when it’s done right.
And apparently? OBSESSION does it VERY right.
Honestly, I’m already considering hosting a watch party in our Discord server once it hits streaming because I have a feeling the Horror Hunt HQ family would absolutely love this one.
So keep your eyes peeled for that announcement.
Now Let’s Talk About The Horror Movies That Hurt My Feelings
Because unfortunately… not everything can be a masterpiece.
The Mortuary Assistant
This one genuinely pains me to talk about because I LOVE the game. Like, all-time favorite kind of love.
So imagine my disappointment when the movie adaptation somehow took such an incredible concept and turned it into something that just felt… flat.
My biggest issue? The acting.
For such a beloved game, the casting felt wildly underwhelming, and the story barely scratched the surface of the lore they could’ve explored. I understand adapting games into movies is difficult, but come on — don’t just recreate scenes from the game. Make it feel cinematic. Expand it. Build tension. Do SOMETHING.
It wasn’t the worst horror movie I’ve ever seen…
…but I definitely left disappointed.
Other 2026 Releases I’d Personally Skip:
- Twisted — genuinely don’t waste your time.
- Return To Silent Hill — another heartbreaking disappointment.
- Faces of Death — absolutely not.
- Sharkula — listen… I have questions. Mostly “why?”
Horror Movies Still Coming In 2026 That Have Me Cautiously Optimistic
Now THIS is where things get exciting.
We still have some massive horror releases heading our way this year:
- Passenger
- Backrooms
- Evil Dead Burn
- Insidious: Out Of The Further
- Buddy
- Resident Evil (please… PLEASE don’t let us down again)
- The Amityville Horror (if it’s not done as well as the Ryan Reynolds remake, I don’t want it)
- Anything But Ghosts
- The Blair Witch Reboot (my expectations are… low)
- Leviticus
There’s genuinely so much potential here. The question is whether studios finally understand what horror fans actually want again.
And Beyond 2026? Horror Fans Are Being FED.
There’s already chatter about:
- a Dead By Daylight movie
- Heart Eyes 2
- Final Destination 7
- another The Exorcist remake (because apparently we can’t stop doing that)
- Evil Dead Wrath
- Cujo
- and possibly another Chucky sequel
Which means horror fans may finally be entering another golden era.
And honestly? I’m here for it.
So… Is Horror Finally Back?
I genuinely think horror is starting to find its footing again.
The genre feels meaner. Weirder. More creative. Less polished in the best possible way. And some of these newer releases are starting to capture that grimy, unforgettable feeling that made 80’s and 90’s horror so iconic to begin with.
If we can keep getting horror movies that actually take risks instead of recycling the same haunted child storyline 47 times…
…we might really be back.
And I NEED to know:
What horror movies have you watched in 2026 so far?
What did you love? What disappointed you? What upcoming release are you most excited for?
Drop your favorites (and your hottest takes) in the comments because I know some of y’all are about to fight me over Return To Silent Hill.
