She Was 98
Jen's Review
She Was 98 wasn’t a bad game at all—though I do have thoughts.
The story felt a bit slow, and I’ll be honest, I was not exactly a fan of the main character. That said, personal feelings aside, the game itself works. The gameplay is pretty solid, and there’s always a marker telling you exactly where to go and what you’re looking for. On one hand, that makes things super easy and accessible. On the other hand… it might’ve held your hand just a little too much. There wasn’t a whole lot of deep thinking involved—no standing around going, “Now where could this possibly be?”
But let’s talk about the real star of the show: grandma.
The jumpscares were good, and grandma was deeply unsettling. She may have been 98, but she looked like she’d been dead for at least a decade or two already—and I mean that in the most respectful, horrifying way possible.
The game is short and to the point, which works in its favor. And while the story itself is incredibly messed up (in the best way), I actually thought the ending was poetic justice. It felt earned, dark, and oddly satisfying.
If you’re looking for a quick horror game that’ll scare you, mildly stress you out, and keep you entertained for an evening, She Was 98 is worth checking out. Just… maybe don’t trust grandma. 👵👀
Kayla's Review
She Was 98 is a weird one for me. It wasn’t my all-time favorite horror game but somehow, I still really enjoyed it. I think my biggest issue was expectation. Being a newer release, I went in hoping for a little more oomph and fewer familiar horror tropes. What I got was solid, creepy, and effective… just not as bold as I was hoping.
The game doesn’t drag and moves at a steady pace. It’s easy to get through in one sitting, which works well and keeps the experience from overstaying its welcome. Atmosphere is absolutely the star here. The devs leaned hard into making everything feel heavy, unsettling, and uncomfortable and it works. And let’s talk about Granny in that rocking chair, because she's just... Pure nightmare fuel.
The scares aren’t constant, but when they happen, they hit pretty hard. I think we came relatively close to our F Off record because of how tense the atmosphere was, making the scares seem much scarier.
The storyline is genuinely unique. The idea of your character becoming the catalyst for what unfolds is an interesting twist and adds weight to the experience. That said, there were moments where I wished they’d pushed things further or done something a little more unexpected with it.
The puzzles are extremely easy, almost too easy. Everything leads you exactly where you need to go, which keeps things flowing but also removes some tension. I think this is where the game lost a bit of its bite for me. From a streaming perspective, this was still a good time. Chat seemed to enjoy the experience, the atmosphere kept people engaged, and we definitely had our fair share of “F off” moments which is always a good sign. Even when it felt a little predictable, it was still entertaining to watch and react to.
She Was 98 is a decent horror game with a strong atmosphere, solid scares, and a unique story concept. It didn’t quite live up to the expectations I had going in, but it was still an enjoyable experience overall. Sometimes the hype sets the bar too high and this one landed just a little under it.
