Jen's Review

The Vesnith Tapes was a huge surprise.

Usually, when a horror game is genuinely great or genuinely terrifying, word spreads pretty quickly. People start recommending it, streamers pick it up, and before long, everyone has at least heard of it.

So when I came across The Vesnith Tapes and realized almost nobody was talking about it, I wasn't exactly expecting much. If I'm being honest, that's usually a pretty bad sign.

Thankfully, I was completely wrong.

This game does an incredible job of building tension through its atmosphere. There's a constant feeling of unease that hangs over the entire experience, and it immediately reminded me of Visage—which is a huge compliment considering that's one of my favorite horror games when it comes to atmosphere.

The game isn't relying on nonstop jumpscares to keep you engaged, either. Instead, it slowly builds that feeling that something is terribly wrong, making you question every hallway, every dark room, and every strange sound you hear. Then, when the jumpscares do happen, they hit incredibly well because the atmosphere has already done all the heavy lifting.

Everything about the experience felt polished. The environments, the pacing, and the way the game keeps you uncomfortable all come together to create a genuinely creepy horror experience.

What surprised me most is that this game isn't talked about more often. I honestly think it deserves far more attention than it's getting because it's a really well-made horror game that absolutely deserves a place on more people's radar.

Overall, The Vesnith Tapes was one of those hidden gems that completely exceeded my expectations. If you're a fan of slower, atmosphere-heavy horror—especially games like Visage—I would absolutely recommend giving this one a shot. It deserves a lot more recognition than it's getting.

The Vesnith Tapes was a game I actually accidentally came across while doom scrolling Steam recommendations.

Now typically I'm not a person that always loves horror games that are more atmospheric than anything... but I feel like the Dev's did it right with this one. This game made me feel completely anxious and uneasy the entire time I played it. There weren't spammy scares, but because the atmosphere was SO tense, when they hit they hit pretty damn well.

I played this one in February of 2026 but it actually released in June of 2025. And I hadn't EVER heard of it until I started playing it and Jen let me know that she had played it previously and enjoyed it.

It definitely gave me some of the same vibes of Gretlow Tapes and Visage. Super high tension, essentially a loop within a house that seems to never end, finding pieces of the story as you progress. Your character is a police officer who is investigating a cold case in an abandoned house. You find a tape recorder that reveals everything you need to know throughout the game to piece together what happened there.

I'd definitely say that this is a hidden gem because again, this is a game I had never heard of before purchasing it on a whim. But it was a great play. The house itself within the game is one I hadn't ever seen before which was a nice change of pace... because as we all know, we often see a ton of the same recycles maps and elements across all indie horror games. The sound design is what really shined with this one. It created a very tense, eerie atmosphere and that did not let up. My only complaint with this one was there was just a bit more walking back and forth than I prefer in a few places, and I felt that the ending was a tad bit rushed. Other than that, it was a solid game and play!

If you're looking for a game that's more tension building and atmospheric, with a decent little story and smooth gameplay, Vesnith Tapes is a great one to dive into!
