Within Skerry
Jen's Review
Within Skerry is a game I genuinely loved. And from the very beginning, it does something incredibly effective without ever spelling it out: about 99% of players are going to immediately make a connection to a real-life place and a real-life horror. A secluded island. A massive mansion. Cages everywhere—human-sized cages. Evidence of deeply nefarious activities. The game never has to say it outright… you just know.
And the story leans fully into that unease.
When the island was evacuated, one of the “prisoners” rigged the place to explode. Not out of malice—but because they were right. Nobody needed to come back. Nobody needed to relive what happened there. The island didn’t need to be remembered. It needed to disappear.
The environment is absolutely creepy, and once that real-world connection clicks in your brain, it makes everything so much worse. There are things lurking that you can’t see, and monsters that you very much can. The tension is constant, quiet, and heavy.
The puzzles were really well done too—challenging but doable. A couple of them were a little frustrating, sure, but honestly? That made finally solving them feel even more rewarding. If a puzzle game never makes you slightly ragey, did you even play it?
And then there’s the ending.
That twist? Yeah. It blew me away.
Everything clicked into place in a way that felt earned, disturbing, and memorable—exactly how a psychological horror game should end.
I absolutely recommend Within Skerry. It’s atmospheric, unsettling, smartly written, and not afraid to lean into uncomfortable truths. This one lingers with you long after you stop playing—and that’s the highest compliment I can give a horror game. 👀
Kayla's Review
I went into Within Skerry not fully knowing what to expect because prior to I didn't read any reviews and I hadn't seen any gameplay yet. And honestly? I’m glad I didn’t.
Because this is one of those games that quietly crawls under your skin instead of screaming in your face about it. One of the things I appreciated most about Within Skerry was how subtle the storytelling was. There’s no massive exposition dump. No character standing there explaining everything to you like you’re five. The devs lean into quiet environmental storytelling, letting you piece things together through exploration, context, and uncomfortable implication. And it works.
You feel like you’re discovering something you maybe weren’t meant to uncover which is always my favorite flavor of horror. This game is uncomfortable and not because it’s constantly throwing things at you. But because it makes you feel… watched. Isolated. Small. The atmosphere is thick without being loud. The environments feel grounded and real, which makes everything hit harder. It doesn’t feel exaggerated, it feels plausible.
The way it leans into real-world parallels makes certain moments land in a way that’s less “boo!” and more “oh… that’s disturbing.” And I love when horror goes that route.
The puzzles...Some of them? Very satisfying. Some of them? Had me staring at my screen questioning my intelligence. They were challenging. Not impossible. Just… frustrating at times. There may have been a few light rage-quit threats. There may have been some dramatic sighing. But ultimately? We still finished them and did not in fact rage quit.
They make you work for it, but they don’t feel unfair. When you finally figure them out, it’s a genuine “ohhhhhh” moment instead of “well that was dumb.” Which I can appreciate even if I did threaten to uninstall once or twice.
Mechanically, the game is super smooth. Movement feels clean, interactions aren’t clunky. I never felt like I was fighting the controls, which is huge in a puzzle-heavy horror game. When the tension is already high, the last thing you need is your character refusing to open a door correctly.
Can we talk about the ending? Excuse me. The ending is what hit the hardest for me because I genuinely did not expect it. No spoilers...but the way everything comes together left me sitting there for a second like…“Ohhh shit.” And that kind of ending sticks with you longer than a cheap scare ever could.
I played this one on stream, and chat really seemed to enjoy it. It’s one of those games that’s actually great for streaming because viewers can help with puzzles (or watch you suffer through them), the atmosphere pulls everyone in, the story gives people something to theorize about, and there were definitely moments where chat was collectively stressed. And we love that energy.
Final Thoughts? Within Skerry isn’t a jumpscare-fest. It’s thoughtful. It’s uncomfortable. It’s quietly disturbing. Yes, the puzzles will test your patience at times. Yes, you might threaten to rage quit. But if you stick with it, I promise the payoff is worth it. It’s atmospheric horror done well. It trusts its environment. It trusts its story. And it respects the player enough to let them figure things out. I highly recommend this one.
